I want to ride my bicycle

For a while now I've been thinking about getting a bike. When I'm visiting Bath I see people flying around the city and along the canal tow paths on their bicycles - and I think that maybe, just maybe, I should join them. But I haven't ridden a bike for a very, very long time - late teens/early twenties - and that, let me tell you, was sometime ago! I'm not going to work it out exactly - that would just frighten me and probably you!

Apparently I won't have forgotten how to do it ...... I was told just get one and jump on it you'll be fine.....well we will just have to see......

But first there are loads of questions I need to ask myself - what sort of bike, what sort of cyclist should I be etc etc etc.....should I embrace cycle chic, should I be sporty, do I need special shoes, helmet, clothes, sun glasses???? the list seems endless but let me just say now - there is no way, no, no way, I'm buying padded cycle shorts - nothing will ever get me into those! no way jose!!

First of all the bike - it's all rather complicated - there are road bikes, trail bikes, touring bikes. cyclocross bikes??? mountain bikes (which I thought were the same as trail bikes - apparently not!) hybrid bikes (hybrid of what?) BMX bikes ( ah! now I know what those are, they had those when I was a kid - I didn't want one then & I don't want one now!) and - my favourite type so far - a flat footed city bike! that sounds like my type of bike.....

So how to choose? I'm going to do my usual thing - look at a few pretty pictures of bikes, show my husband which one I like the look of, let him shake his head and then take me to the shops and show me which one would be best for me to try! Forget women's lib and all that...... when I have no idea I don't pretend anymore I just go with the knowledge of others!

Right so that's the bike part sorted, next - what sort of cyclist do I want to be? The sporty one, the 'girl about town on her bike' type, am I going to embrace 'cycle chic' or shall I just pull on my jeans and a hoodie, lace up my trainers and peddle off? Difficult questions ......

And then there's the helmet! Ugh they all look awful but I suppose I need to be safe!

Next the question of baskets........ Am I just going out for a ride or am I going to be going somewhere? will I be buying shopping, delivering things, needing a picnic - will I use a rucksack or should I have a panniers or a basket......

and don't get me started on bells.....
