A Quick Trip to Iona

Lying off the Western tip of Mull and just across from our campsite is the little island of Iona.

Having gazed at it for the last few days we decided to hop on the ferry and take a quick trip.

We've seen loads of people heading there whilst we've been staying on Mull - Coach loads of American and Japanese tourists, a very loud but amicable gathering of bikers and a very jolly group of Nuns

              - is there a collective word for a group of nuns? a chattering - hmmm unless it's a silent order! - how about a giggle - as in this case, but that would be more appropriate for a group of school girls! -  maybe a troop, or a posse! although a choir or a convert would be more appropriate, anyway whatever the collective noun is, this group was very happy and obviously enjoying their day out.

On the day we decided to go no so many people were around and we shared the ferry with a few families from Sweden and a couple of tonnes of gravel.........destination unknown..... the gravel not the Swedes, although come to think of it I'm not sure where they were heading either ........ anyway I digress....

Before we embarked for our trip we stopped of at The Creel, a little wooden shack at the end of the harbour in Fionnphort.

Here they sell the best smoked salmon sandwiches I have ever eaten and I really do mean ever! Serve on malted brown bread with a little bit of cream cheese they were fantastic and each sandwich had loads of smoked salmon.

We visited here every morning to get our lunch before heading off around Mull and every morning I read the menus and still ordered the smoked salmon sandwich! Andrew's more adventurous and tries a variety of filings - all just as good apparently!

So just before we jumped on the ferry we stopped an bought our lunch and - you guessed it, I bought the smoked salmon sandwich - I was not disappointed.

So Iona was perfect - quiet, white sandy beaches, hills covered in wild orchids, loads of birds and wild life - and small enough for us to wander all over the island, taking our time before the trip back.

Here are a few pictures from our day.......

Our ferry over - with it's lorry load of gravel.....

Arriving on beautiful Iona.......

View across to Mull - our tent is just over there some where.......

Some of the flowers around the island - the orchids were everywhere......

Have a lovely day - we will be heading home soon.......

Oh, and by the way. I looked it up - a collective on nuns is called a superfluity - no I have never ever had need to use that word before either..........
