A Lighthouse and a Cup of Coffee...

It was rather wild and woolly this morning  - translation - it was blowing a hoolie and I needed a woolly hat and jumper! .........Forget the sun dress where's my thermals..........remind me again .......who's idea was it to visit Scotland this year??

We decided to head to the furthest point of Ardnamurchan and take a look at the lighthouse - the lure of a coffee shop and a warm up!

The drive to the light was rather scary and impressive. All the roads are single track and the final stretch is along a really narrow winding road on the edge of the cliff face. Thank goodness they have put in a simple traffic light system - I would hate to meet an oncoming car and have to reverse this road!

Andrew drove ........ I looked at the view!

But the drive was well worth it. Being sailors we find it really interesting pottering around lighthouses. We hear them mentioned on the shipping forecasts and see their lights at night - it's always a buzz to actually look around them on dry land and not sailing past watching them from far off - they were put there for a reason and in a boat you do not want to get to close!

We visited the little museum - facts learnt .......

1. It's 36 meters tall (that's 118ft !)

b. It's built of pink granite in 1849

iii) Was designed by Alan Stevenson who was the uncle of Robert Louis Stevenson who wrote treasure Island

4. It is the only lighthouse in the UK built in the Egyptian Style - no I don't know what that means either! did they use slaves? was papyrus used for the plans? did Cleopatra oversee it ??? I have no clue..........and I have run out of my Egyptian facts......so here's a picture of the light instead......

and the fog horn........

And just for my Dad and Andrew  - and any other Engineers who like these things......... a few pictures of the engine room - we did seem to spend rather a long time in here whilst Andrew prodded and pushed and explained (yawn) to me how it all worked......

And then time for coffee....... yay..........and cake!......... it was chocolate.......with marshmallows......

So now that's done were going to dismantle our tent, pack the car and jump onto the ferry for the Isle of Mull......

Hope you all have a great day today
