One to tick of the bucket list...

One major thing on Andrews bucket list is to learn to fly and maybe even - one day - getting his pilots licence - but if he thinks he's getting me up in one of those things, when he's at the controls, he's got another thing coming - I have to 'ride shotgun' when he's driving a car imaging what he would be like in a plane - no way I'm doing a loop-the-loop with him!!!!

So, when he found out there was a gliding club at the University he was signed up quicker than you can say Amelia Earhart.

Last weekend, with the images of the Thomas Crown Affair and the song ' Windmills of your mind' running through his head, he headed off for his first day of gliding....

Here are a few of the gliders. The first training flight was in the red motorised plane pictured at the start of the post.

Andrew had a couple if flights in the gliders - one catching a few really good thermals and gliding for about 40 minutes which apparently is a long time. The average training flight is usually 10 minutes.....

Here's the launch winch that's used to 'throw' the glider into the air (that's my terminology at work there I'm sure there's a technical word for it but as far as I'm concerned that's what there doing!)

The tractor is used to tow it into place

A few of the gliders in their hangers - puchacz is apparently polish for eagle owl - just so you know

This is launch control - well that's a posh name for the old green painted caravan at the bottom of the field where you can get a bacon butty and a mug of hot tea.....

I've just realised, after showing you all these pictures, that not only am I a sailing widow I'm also about to become a flying widow - so if I'm going to be able to see my husband at all this summer I'm going to have to adopt the approach of 'if you can't beat them join them' ...... so, maybe next time I'll play the role of 'Faye Dunaway' and have a go at the gliding as well......and all the time I'll be humming ........

"Round like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning on an ever spinning reel
Like a snowball down a mountain, or a carnival balloon
Like a carousel that's turning running rings around the moon
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping past the minutes of its face
And the world is like an apple whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind!"

Have a lovely Tuesday
