The Duck Race

On a lovely warm Saturday afternoon our local village held it's annual Duck Race.

Now, I've never been to one of these events -  but having seen the posters - Andrew & I decided to go and take a look.

It was a fun way to spend the afternoon with a beer tent.......

And barbecue's dotted around the field....

and cake stalls......

We were able to grab some lunch, sit on the grass and watch an impromptu game of football, featuring the young & the old - along with some of the children having a go at a teddy bear version of a coconut shie....

Not sure about this - seems a bit cruel!!!       poor teddy!

And playing with bubbles - whilst we waited for the ducks.....

The race was due to start at 6:00pm so before hand we all bought our 'duck' which entailed handing over money (£1 per duck)  choosing a number and writing our names next to it.

I was informed that these numbers had also been written on the bottom of each duck!

We all then lined the banks of the stream and waited.

Suddenly the cry went up from the children up stream from us that the ducks had been released......

And sure enough down the stream they bobbed

All heading for the finish line             (suspicously someone seems to be carrying ducks in this picture??)

Unfortunately most of the ducks floated bottom side up (well at least you get to see the numbers!)

And most of them got stuck in the bank. Two intrepid children climbed into the stream to herd the ducks down river.

All in all it was a pleasant way to spend a Saturday afternoon but the duck race wasn't as exciting as it sounded - perhaps you have to be a little bit younger than me!!

.......I didn't win...........

...............I didn't even get to see my duck!!
